We understand that you encounter issues when using the Read Aloud feature in your Office applications. Sometimes an outdated app can trigger the feature, and its function not to work. Let me help you in the best way I can.

First off, we'd like to know the following for further investigation:

  1. Could you please verify which build and version of Office are you using? To get this information, you may follow the steps provided in this article.
  2. Is this the first time that you've noticed this concern? If yes, are there any changes made prior to this issue?
  3. Have you tried installing all available updates on your computer, such as Office and Windows Updates? If not yet, please do so and see if there's any improvement. Here are the links below for the proper procedures on how to install updates for your Office and Windows computer:

To help us isolate this concern further, may we ask if you've already tried the following methods?

Method 1: Confirm if the correct language pack for Read Aloud is installed on the customer. You may check this link for your reference.

Once you have downloaded the correct language pack, you will need to change the voice used in the drop-down settings for the Read Aloud feature. See the image below:



Method 2:Try to use the Speak feature of Windows 10 as described in this article, which works by speaking ONLY selected text, and language can be chosen. Additional language for Speak can be downloaded by the following guidance through this link.

In line with your main concern, we are still waiting for ourInternal Support Team for more updates and accurate fixes to solve the Read Aloud feature in the Office applications.  Once we have any information regarding this, we will let you know immediately. Please continue to standby. Thank you.

Method 1: After checking that the language pack is indeed downloaded and installed, I tried changing voices. There are three options: Pablo, Laura, Helena. All of them read correctly in Spanish, but if one of the words in the middle of the sentence has a viable English pronunciation, they will switch to it, then continue in Spanish. By the way, the article in Link 1 shows an interface that differs from my Window interface; specifically, Region and Language are separate.

Method 2: Same result. However, I cannot select the language as stated above; if I press the Speak button, it will read the highlighted text, using English if possible (e.g. "meter" is both a valid English and Spanish word; English is always read, even in the middle of a Spanish sentence).

Thank you, Genevieve. I would expect the feature spec to state that the text has to be read with the spelling language with which it was tagged. Expecting that the text is going to be read according to some system setting or some mystery auto-detect is simplistic - many of us speak and work with more than one language, and many words with the same spelling are correct valid words in other languages. We take the trouble of going to Review/Language/Set Proofing Language to set the correct language so the spell -and more importantly, the grammar checker- know how to handle the text. Read Aloud should do the same. I know Microsoft can be quite Redmond-centric and English-centric, I used to work there. I wish more bilingual employees got to be feature PMs in language-critical features.
